AHNET is fed up with SPAM!  Hundreds of junk messages a day trying to make us reply to buy penis enlargers, or give our bank account numbers to fraudulent Nigerian business people and much more.  Not to mention the Adult "pay sites" that are supposedly free!

We've established an automated process that automatically adds open relay servers and spamers to a block list.  The criteria for being added to the block list is as follows:

  1. mail server attempted to send e-mail to a "seed" address.  A Seed address is one we have planted on a web site or "opt-out" lists that is unique in each usage instance.  To use a seed address is the worst offence.
  2. e-mail is from a non existent e-mail address
  3. e-mail is to a non existent user of made up characters
  4. e-mail is addressed to out list server and not a list administration command
  5. e-mail is from <> address but isn't administrative
  6. remote smtp server ignores close connection and continues to deliver commands that are not SMTP commands but in fact junk e-mail
  7. they sent it to our unique automatic spam blocking e-mail address! (This is like a bank robber who calls the police from the bank to say he is robbing the bank and waits for them to arrive.)

There are probably more criteria.

Once added to the list, a Class C, domain name or remote address will be sent a message telling them to come to our feedback web page and explain what they have done to ensure the issue no longer exists.  Once their server(s) have been tested to ensure they no longer allow unauthorised relay, they will be removed from the block list, but not from the database.  If after 6 months no more incidents occur they will be permanently marked as secure.

Repeat offenders don't get to go beyond the second attempt.

You can view our current Sendmail Block list and download it for your own use.  If you have addresses and hosts that you would like to add, you can contact us through our feedback form and we'll establish a blocking account with you.  You can then forward complete messages with headers and our automated robot will do the rest.

If you would like automated updates to the spam list to be sent to you, please contact us using our feedback form.

This system is operated of a mySQL database server.  We can output the spam list in many forms, including DNS data.  It's possible in the future we'll establish a "reverse" ORBS type system where ISPs and Mail Server operators register their mail server, just like you do a Domain Name and your Name Servers.  Each registration will be tested and if it passes the new server will be added to the ACCEPT LIST.

Shortly a staistics page showing the number of servers, number of new servers, and number of addresses that are blocked will be created to entertain us all.

If you have any comments, questions or suggestions please use the feedback form.
